The Adorable Snow Leopard Faces Extinction

Are you familiar with the ‘white leopard’? This leopard with fur as white as snow is called the ‘snow leopard’.

The snow leopard is classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Primarily inhabiting high-altitude regions of Mongolia, China, and other countries, the snow leopard has faced an extinction crisis due to the destruction of its habitat caused by mining and development. Furthermore, indiscriminate hunting by individuals who use the leopard's fur and bones for medicinal purposes has also contributed to the decline in snow leopard populations.

The reason why ‘snow’ is part of the snow leopard's name is not only because of its white fur but also because it lives in snowy regions. However, with the ongoing global climate change and warming temperatures, the snow-covered areas where snow leopards live have been shrinking, which is another contributing factor to their endangerment. As the Earth's average temperature rises, the Himalayan region, which receives a lot of snow, experiences temperature increases more readily than other areas. The snowline, which marks the lower limit of permanent snow, is gradually moving upward, forcing snow leopards to seek higher altitudes in search of suitable habitats.

In 2017, the snow leopard's endangered status was upgraded from Endangered (EN) to Vulnerable (VU). While this adjustment in status is noteworthy, it does not indicate that the snow leopard is no longer facing an extinction threat. Currently, only about 3,000 snow leopards remain worldwide. And this number continues to decrease.

What efforts are needed to prevent the snow leopard from going extinct? First, illegal poaching of snow leopards must be prohibited. We need to raise awareness among residents living near snow leopard habitats so that they no longer hunt this endangered species. Furthermore, we must prevent artificial habitat destruction and take measures to counteract climate change to prevent the natural snowline from rising further. If these are difficult to achieve, finding new habitats where snow leopards can survive is another possible solution.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an organization that champions the cause of endangered animals, is actively engaged in various efforts to prevent the snow leopard from extinction. These efforts include researching new habitats for snow leopards, educating local communities about snow leopards, and conducting campaigns. They also attach tracking devices to snow leopards to study their behavior.

The extinction of one species can have a cascading impact on the entire ecosystem. This means that preventing the extinction of one species can have a positive ripple effect on the entire ecosystem. We need greater awareness and attention to protect the dwindling snow leopard population and the fragile ecosystem it inhabits.
