Disney+, which launched its first Korean original series in 2022, is expanding its influence in the Korean OTT market with the success of works such as "Moving" and "A Shop for Killers." Disney+ has now revealed a list of Korean original series scheduled for release in 2024. Let's take a look at what's in store.

"Blood Free (지배종)", a new work by Lee Soo-yeon, the writer of the Korean drama "Stranger," is set in a future where people no longer eat meat. In a world where cultured meat has replaced conventional meat, the biggest beneficiary is BF, a biotechnology company that developed and commercialized cultured meat. The story revolves around individuals who question BF's CEO and delve into their doubts. Actress Han Hyo-joo plays the role of Yoon Ja-yu, the CEO of BF, while actor Joo Ji-hoon portrays a bodyguard who protects the CEO. With a blend of sci-fi elements and mystery, this series promises to be an intriguing watch.



2. Uncle Samsik (삼식이 삼촌)

Song Kang-ho, who rose to international fame with "Parasite," takes on his first drama role after a successful film career. "Uncle Samsik (삼식이 삼촌)" is a period drama set in the 1960s. The title, "Uncle Samsik," refers to someone who always eats three meals a day, and Song Kang-ho plays this character. The story revolves around Uncle Samsik, who made sure to eat three meals a day even during the Korean War (1950-1953), and Kim San, whose dream was to create a prosperous nation where everyone could have enough to eat. The drama explores the events that unfold when these two individuals meet. Actor Byeon Yo-han portrays Kim San, an elite young man. Anticipation is high for Song Kang-ho's debut drama, which will be available on Disney+ in May 2024.



3. Light Shop (조명가게)

Following the massive success of "Moving" in 2023, attention has turned to another work by Kang-pul, the author of the original webtoon. "Light Shop (조명가게)", a Disney+ original based on Kang-pul's webtoon of the same name, is expected to be a darker production than "Moving," with a focus on horror and mystery. Set in a lighting shop where the realms of the living and the dead intersect, the series seems poised to deliver another sci-fi experience. Currently, the only actor whose role has been officially revealed is Joo Ji-hoon, who plays the owner of the lighting shop.

JC Entertainment, Actor Kim Hee-won

One notable aspect of "Light Shop (조명가게)" is that actor Kim Hee-won is directing the series. Kim Hee-won, who has appeared in films like "The Man from Nowhere" and "The Merciless" and the drama "Moving," is making his directorial debut with this project. Recently, there has been a growing trend of actors venturing into directing, with examples such as Kim Yoon-seok with "Another Child," Jung Woo-sung with "A Man of Reason," and Lee Jung-jae with "HUNT." It will be interesting to see what Kim Hee-won brings to the table as a director.



4. Trigger (트리거)

Actor Joo Jong-hyuk, who gained recognition through "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," and actor Jung Sung-il, who rose to prominence in "The Glory," team up with top Korean actress Kim Hye-soo for a comedy drama. Set in a news investigation team, the series features Kim Hye-soo as a justice-driven investigative reporter team leader and Jung Sung-il as an independent-minded PD. Joo Jong-hyuk's role has not yet been revealed. The genre is known to be an office comedy, and Kim Hye-soo has previously demonstrated her expertise in a similar genre with the 2013 drama "The Queen of Office," adding to the anticipation surrounding this project.

Other upcoming releases in the second half of 2024 include the action-romance film "Red Swan (화인가 스캔들)" starring Kim Ha-neul and Rain, "The Tyrant (폭군)" with Cha Seung-won and Kim Seon-ho, and "Gangnam B-Side" featuring Jo Woo-jin and Ji Chang-wook. Whether Disney+ can become the top Korean OTT platform in 2024 hinges on the success of these featured projects.


All original series scheduled for release on Disney+ Korea in 2024 will also be available for streaming on Hulu and Star+.
