Disney+ Korea, which launched its first Korean original series in 2022, is expanding its influence in the Korean OTT market with the success of works such as “Moving” and “A Shop for Killers”. Disney+ has announced its list of Korean original series scheduled for release in 2024. Let’s take a look at what’s coming.

1. Blood Free (지배종)

“Blood Free” is a new work by writer Lee Soo-yeon, who wrote the Korean drama “Stranger.” The story is set in a time when people no longer eat meat. In a world where artificial cultured meat has replaced meat, the biggest beneficiary is ‘BF’, a biotechnology company that developed and commercialized artificial cultured meat. People who doubt the CEO of ‘BF’ investigate their doubts. Actress Han Hyo-joo plays the CEO of ‘BF’, ‘Yoon Ja-yu’, and actor Joo Ji-hoon plays the bodyguard who protects the CEO of ‘BF’. With a sci-fi setting and added mystery elements, we are highly anticipating what this series will bring.

2. Uncle Samshik (삼식이 삼촌)

Song Kang-ho, who became a global actor through “Parasite,” will be making his first foray into drama, not film. Disney+’s upcoming drama, “Uncle Samshik”, is a historical drama set in the 1960s. “Uncle Samshik” is a Korean phrase that means someone who always eats three meals a day. Song Kang-ho will be playing the role of Uncle Samshik. This story is about the incidents that occur between ‘Uncle Samshik’, who always made sure to eat three meals a day even during the Korean War (from 1950 to 1953), and ‘Kim San’, whose dream was to make the country prosperous enough for everyone to be able to eat. Actor Byun Yo-han will be playing the role of the elite youth ‘Kim San’. We are excited to see what Song Kang-ho’s first drama will look like after only appearing in films. “Uncle Samshik” will be released on Disney+ in May 2024.

3. Light Shop (조명가게)

Following the success of “MOVING” in 2023, attention is focused on another work by writer Kang Full, who created the original webtoon. “Light Shop”, an upcoming Disney+ release based on the webtoon “Light Shop” by writer Kang Full, appears to be a darker work than “MOVING” in the genres of horror and mystery. The series will likely be another sci-fi creation, set in a lighting shop where the world of the living and the world of the dead intersect. Currently, the only actor whose role has been officially released is Joo Ji-hoon, who will be playing the owner of the lighting shop.

One noteworthy point is that actor Kim Hee-won is in charge of directing. Actor Kim Hee-won, who has appeared in films such as “The Man from Nowhere”, “The Merciless” and the drama “MOVING”, will be making his directorial debut with “Light Shop”. Recently, actors Kim Yoon-seok directed the film “Another Child”, Jung Woo-sung directed the film “A Man of Reason” and Lee Jung-jae directed the film “HUNT”. 4. Trigger (트리거)

Actor Joo Jong-hyuk, who became a household name through “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”, and actor Jung Seong-il, who gained recognition through “The Glory”, will create a comedy drama with Korea’s top actress Kim Hye-soo. This series, set in the investigative reporting department, will feature actress Kim Hye-soo as the head of the investigative reporting team, who is full of a sense of justice, and actor Jung Seong-il as an independent-minded producer. Actor Joo Jong-hyuk’s role has yet to be revealed. The genre is said to be office comedy. Kim Hye-soo has already shown her prowess in a similar genre with the 2013 drama “The Queen of Office”, raising anticipation for this drama.

In addition to these, “Red Swan” (화인가 스캔들), an action melodrama starring Kim Ha-neul and Jung Ji-hoon, “The Tyrant” (폭군) starring Cha Seung-won and Kim Seon-ho, and “Gangnam B-Side” starring Jo Woo-jin and Ji Chang-wook are all scheduled to be released in the second half of 2024. It remains to be seen whether Disney+ will be able to take the top spot in the Korean OTT industry in 2024, but it seems to depend on the works mentioned above.

All original series scheduled for release on Disney+ Korea in 2024 will be streamed on hulu and STAR+ in addition to Disney+.
