The legendary drama “Chief Detective” is returning in 2024 as a new prequel.

“Chief Detective,” a representative Korean detective drama that aired 880 episodes from 1971 to 1989, achieved a phenomenal feat by recording a peak viewership rating of 70% during its broadcast. The main characters who played detectives for about 20 years in the drama were so popular that they became honorary police officers after the drama ended. For the past 10 years, there had been rumors of a new season being produced, and finally, in 2024, the official confirmation of a new season was announced. The new “Chief Detective 1958” is a prequel that tells the story of Detective Park Young-han, the protagonist of the original series, before he became the Chief Detective.

The original “Chief Detective” is a drama depicting Detective Park Young-han’s exploits in solving real-life cases. It also offers a glimpse into how detectives solved cases in the past when advanced scientific investigation techniques, common CCTV cameras today, and specialized profiling technology were not readily available.

“Chief Detective 1958” is set in 1958 and portrays the story of Park Young-han, who becomes a righteous detective in a corrupt era. Actor Lee Je-hoon plays the role of Detective Park Young-han, and his character evokes memories of the detective he portrayed in “Signal” and the character who fights against evil in the “Taxi Driver” series. It will be interesting to see how this drama will differentiate itself from his previous characters.

Choi Bul-am, the actor who played the lead role of Detective Park Young-han in the original series, has also decided to make a special appearance in the new season, making headlines.
