When you think of a ‘third-generation chaebol,’ a typical image comes to mind: someone who doesn't care about what others think, has no worries about money, and lives a life where they can do whatever they want. The protagonist of the drama “Chaebol X Cop (FlexxCop),” Jin Yi-soo, is exactly that kind of character. As the youngest son of a chaebol family, Jin Yi-soo has no interest in running the company and is only interested in having fun. One day, he gets caught up in an incident. He ends up apprehending a criminal that the police had been chasing. In an attempt to handle this situation, the chaebol family decides to make Jin Yi-soo a police officer. Overnight, the third-generation chaebol becomes a cop.
Lee Kang-hyun, the team leader of the Violent Crimes Unit, disapproves of Jin Yi-soo. He is a person who is more than satisfied with his life as a police officer. Having dreamed of becoming a police officer since he was a child, inspired by his father who was also a police officer, Lee Kang-hyun graduated from the Police University and was promoted to Superintendent with an amazing arrest rate. He has been working towards clearing his father’s name, who had been unfairly accused and dishonorably discharged from the police force. In the midst of his work, the unimaginable happens: a third-generation chaebol joins his team. Lee Kang-hyun finds Jin Yi-soo annoying, but he becomes conflicted as Jin Yi-soo surprisingly solves cases well.

Often, when police characters appear in dramas, they are portrayed as unfortunate individuals, either having a strained relationship with their family due to their busy work schedule, being nagged by their spouse due to their low salary, or being corrupted by bribery. The reality is that the compensation they receive is often insufficient for the work they do. This leads to the frequent appearance of corrupt police characters in dramas. It’s also a common theme to see police officers unable to properly investigate cases due to the influence of prosecutors or wealthy chaebols.
However, in this drama, “Chaebol X Cop (FlexxCop),” a third-generation chaebol becomes a police officer and leads investigations. There’s a vague expectation that a chaebol with both money and power, who becomes a police officer, could conduct investigations without any restrictions. It’s interesting to see how these expectations are reflected in the drama.
Actually, there was a drama where a wealthy police officer was the main character. The drama, called “The Good Detective,” aired in 2020. In this drama, the main character was a poor person who became rich after inheriting his great-uncle’s fortune. While “The Good Detective’s” protagonist originally dreamed of becoming a police officer and possessed a strong sense of duty and clear goals as a police officer, “Chaebol X Cop (FlexxCop)”’s Jin Yi-soo never intended to become a police officer and naturally lacks a sense of duty as a police officer. Although the two dramas share some similar settings, I believe their differences are far more significant than their similarities.
It is anticipated that actor Ahn Bo-hyun, who rose to stardom with “Itaewon Class,” and actress Park Ji-hyun, who left a strong impression with “Reborn Rich,” will showcase great chemistry together.
